Long ago, the Arab tribes lived in a hot desert land filled with sand, strong sun, and very little water. Life was harsh, and tribes had been fighting each other for many years over land and resources. Life often felt unfair, and many people wanted peace and justice. Muhammad spent a lot of time thinking about these problems. He would travel to a quiet cave in the mountains, away from the heat and noise, to pray and be alone with his thoughts.
One night in the cave, something amazing happened. The angel Gabriel appeared to Muhammad with a message from God. Muhammad was very scared and did not understand why he had been chosen. He ran home shaking and worried. His wife, Khadijah, comforted him and told him not to be afraid. She believed in him and said that God would only choose a good and honest person for such an important message. Her support helped Muhammad find courage.
Muhammad began teaching people to worship one God, treat others kindly, and live fairly. Slowly, the fighting tribes began to come together. After Muhammad died, his followers continued spreading his message. As nearby empires weakened from war, Muslim armies spread Islam across large parts of the Middle East, North Africa, and beyond.
Today, about one out of every four people in the world is Muslim, and Islam continues to guide people in how they pray, help others, and live peaceful lives. Because of the Prophet Muhammad’s importance, Muhammad is one of the most common names in the world, given by families to honor him.
