Women

Women were treated with respect, though they did not have the same rights as men. Some worked as craftswomen, dancers, and traders, while others took care of families at home. In cities, women wore bright cotton and silk clothes, decorated themselves with gold and ivory jewelry, and used natural perfumes and oils. Wealthy women were educated and sometimes owned land or businesses. In villages, women helped farm the land, milk cows, and care for animals. Festivals and family gatherings were times for songs, laughter, and colorful celebrations.
