Women

Women seem to have held high positions in Olmec society. Many sculptures and figurines show female or gender-neutral bodies, suggesting that the Olmecs did not care as much about strict gender roles as many other ancient societies did.

Women may have been religious leaders, healers, artists, or community leaders. Some researchers think that women could have had strong spiritual authority, which might explain why Olmec art often does not show clear male or female features.
