After the Middle Ages, Europe began to change. A very important event happened when the Ottoman Empire captured the city of Constantinople. This city was a key place for trade between Europe and Asia. After it was captured, trade became harder and more expensive.
Goods from Asia, like spices, were very important. Spices helped food taste better and last longer. Soon, spices became so costly that people said a pinch of pepper was worth as much as a pinch of gold.
Because of this, Europeans wanted to find new ways to reach Asia. They started building better ships and learning how to travel across the sea. Sailors used maps, compasses, and sails to go farther than ever before.
Instead of reaching Asia, explorers reached the Americas. European countries found and stole gold and silver, which made them very rich. They also took land from Native Americans and started new settlements.
With new money, new lands, and better ships, Europe grew stronger. This time is called the Age of Exploration, and it helped Europe rise to power.
