After Emperor Ashoka’s death, his empire began to fall apart. Later rulers were weaker and fought among themselves. Some provinces broke away, and foreign tribes like the Sakas attacked from the northwest, taking over parts of the empire. Without a strong leader to hold it together, the once-mighty Mauryan Empire slowly disappeared by 185 BCE.
