For thousands of years, no one could read Egypt’s beautiful picture writing, called hieroglyphs. Then, in 1799, soldiers found the Rosetta Stone. It had the same message written in three different languages — Greek and two kinds of Egyptian writing. A smart man named Jean-François Champollion studied it carefully and finally figured out how to read hieroglyphs! Thanks to this discovery, people could finally understand the stories and secrets written on Egypt’s ancient walls and temples.
Look for the hieroglyphs that are written inside an oval shape — those are the names of pharaohs! The Egyptians believed that putting a name inside this special loop, called a cartouche, protected the pharaoh from harm. Can you spot the cartouches in the image above?
